Medical Laboratory

Upon completion of these courses for generic B.Sc. Medical Laboratory program, the graduates are expected to:
1.Collect and prepare human samples for analysis. Store or transport samples for analysis using appropriate preservation methods.
2.Follow prescribed procedures, and with adequate orientation, perform routine testing in chemistry, microbiology, immunology, immunohematology, hematology, hemostasis, and molecular diagnostics.
3.Operate and calibrate clinical laboratory instruments or equipment after proper orientation.
4.Recognize and correct basic instrument malfunctions. Refer serious instrument problems to a senior laboratorian or a supervisor when necessary.
5.Prepare reagents or media from a prescribed procedure, including calculating necessary computations, using an analytical balance, and adjusting the pH if necessary.
6.Evaluate media, reagents, and standards according to established criteria.
7.Conduct established quality control procedures on analytical tests, equipment, reagents, media, and products; evaluate results of quality control and implement corrective action when indicated.
8.Establish basic quality control procedures, confidence limits, and normal ranges for new procedures or methods.
9.Perform comparison studies on new or existing procedures and report results according to conventional scientific formats.
10.Assess the reliability of laboratory results through correlation of data with common physiological conditions.
11.In prescribed instances indicate the need for additional laboratory tests for definitive diagnostic information.
12.Provide clinical orientation and supervision for students and new or less skilled laboratory personnel. Lecture or provide class demonstrations.
13.Practice established safety measures.
14.Inform superiors of activities including unusual patient data or results.
15.Recognize and act on the need for continuing education to maintain and grow in professional competencies.
16.Present effective in-service continuing education sessions when asked.
17.Apply managerial/supervisory skills for completion of projects as assigned.
18.Comply with applicable regulatory statutes.
19.Practice quality assurance and performance improvement techniques for optimum laboratory analysis.
20.Manage laboratory operations and human resources to ensure cost-effective, high-quality laboratory services.
21.Communicate effectively with members of the healthcare team, external relations, and patients.
22.Evaluate research and published studies to remain informed of new techniques and procedures.
23.Utilize information management systems to provide timely and accurate reporting of laboratory data.
24.Behave in a professional and ethical manner.
25.Maintain focus on the patient to provide quality laboratory services.

Graduate Profile

Graduate professionals are expected to give quality patient care by applying ethical and legal principles and also counseling and teaching of patient with regard to existing health problem of the community. Beside to this they have to involve in teaching and learning process, conduct research, take leadership and managerial role and contribute for the development of profession. Generally, they are expected to provide curative, preventive and rehabilitative services at primary, secondary and tertiary level of health care system.

Admission Requirements

A. Generic

• Candidates must be a natural science student in secondary school & preparatory classes and full fill the following criteria
• Meet the set criteria of the Ministry of Education for degree students to join higher learning institution
• Physically and mentally fit for Medical Laboratory service.
• Preferably, those who choose to enter the profession.

B. Standing/Post Basic

The applicants for advance standing program should fulfil the following screening and admission criteria:

• To be eligible for admission into the advance standing Medical Laboratory B.Sc. program, a candidate should:
• Fulfilled the stated criteria by the Ministry of Education;
• Have obtained a minimum of 2 or 60% cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in previous diploma program.
• Have served in Medical Laboratory for a minimum of two years but sponsoring organization may raise this within their custody.
• Should bring COC certificate where it applied.
• Present letter of sponsorship. If self sponsored, it will be based on the rules and regulations of the registrar.
• Age not more than 45(As per the legislation of the College)
• Physically and mentally fit to practice Medical Laboratory
• Entrance examination more on professional subjects

C. Procedure for Application

The applicants should apply to the office of registrar. The office of the registrar will send the applicants to the department The department will select the eligible candidates and notify to the office of the registrar and will be approved by academic commission through the office of registrar. After admission candidates have the right for course drop and add according to the rule of the registrar if they fulfil the prerequisite courses Candidate can be exempted from non-professional courses if s/he scored A or B on that specific course.

Quality Assurance

It will be assured by regular assessment of student performances according to the components of quality assurance.

• In the course of the semester,
• At the end of the semester,

At the end of the year,

• Before starting the intern-ship program
• At the completion of the study years (end of 4th year), the student should pass the comprehensive exam before passing (starting) to the internship program and at the end of the program, the student should complete the requirement in the log book to present in the external examination and national qualification examination.
• Internal and external examination (oral, written & Practical examination) will be given.
• Sitting for the national qualifying examination
• Tracing graduates performance at their work place for effectiveness evaluation.

Graduation Requirements

A student cannot graduate with a grade of less than 2.0 out of the 4-scale grading system. Therefore, he/she should at least score a minimum of C grade for the major/Professional course

• A student with ‘C-‘can pass to the next semester if it is first semester period and it increases with level/year of students. A student with a good stand can graduate if he/she scores ‘C-‘in any course under module. However, if the ‘C-‘grade is for a Module or for a course as a module, he/she must re-sit for another exam to remove ‘C-
• A student with all ‘Ds’ cannot pass to the next semester. A student with a good stand can pass to the next semester and even can graduate if he/she scores D in any course under module. However, if the ‘D’ grade is for a Module or for a course as a module, he/she must re-sit for another exam to remove ‘D’.
• A student with F must repeat the course/module for two times and the grade will be any of what a student can score
• The students should complete the skills and activities written in the logbook which annexed at the end curriculum.
• The details of all of the above will be done in the harmonized Academic Policy.

Degree Nomenclature

Upon successful completion of this program the graduate will be given "THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN Medical Laboratory" in English

Assessment and Evaluation Methods

The program follows a combination of various assessment and evaluation techniques. Considering the very nature of the course and the expected learning outcome from each course, the assessment and evaluation methods include continuous assessment like assignments; quizzes, tests, individual and group projects, paper based and practical exams, presentations, and the like

Teaching /Learning Methods and Mode of Delivery

Mixed Approach will be used; parallel for English language and Civics and Ethical Education module and Block for the rest. Semester base for module 1 up to 6 to be given on year I Module 7 up to 18 will be provided on year base on second, third and fourth year Full time four year regular program.
